There are three branches of basic research: Material, Energy, and Observational. Each sector has different density values for these different branches, which determine how much research the selected reward in each branch will get on enemy kills (excluding any bonuses and multipliers). Additionally, one of the three branches can be focused at any time, granting it an extra multiplier.
